Van Metre Companies provide BIG help to Little Hearts. Children's National Medical Center honored the Van Metre Companies for their donation of $1.2 million to fund a state-of-the-art cardiovascular surgery operating room. The Van Metre Companies, a privately held residential and commercial property development company based in Washington, D.C., have supported the cardiac surgery program at Children's National over the past 25 years, giving more than $1.7 million during that time. The Van Metre Companies leadership, including Richard J. Rabil, vice chairman, president and chief executive officer, and Children's National leadership were on hand to celebrate the newly constructed space. Peter Holbrook, MD, chief medical officer at Children's National said, "We are proud of the long-standing partnership between the Van Metre Companies and Children's National Hospital. We are so grateful for their commitment to helping children undergoing heart surgery live long and healthy lives." "The Van Metre Companies are thrilled at the opening of the cardiovascular surgery suite at Children’s National," said Rabil. "We support this cause because of Children's long-standing support of kids in our community. They save lives everyday. We are very fortunate in the D.C. Metro area to have an institution like Children's in our backyard." The Van Metre Companies Cardiovascular Operating Room features highly integrated technology and state-of-the-art surgical equipment designed to care for even the most complex cardiac patient. According to Angie Francart, vice president of perioperative services in the Joseph E. Robert, Jr. Center for Surgical Care and the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children's National, "This is the operating room of the future. It is an extraordinary convergence of technology, space, and safety, that matches the caliber of the talent here at Children's National." The innovative operating room was dedicated in honor of Frank M.Midgley, MD, former Executive Director of the Joseph E. Robert, Jr. Center for Surgical Care and Division Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at Children's National, for his legacy of life-saving cardiac surgeries he performed on so many area children. A significant portion of the funds for the Van Metre Cardiovascular Operating Room were raised through the Van Metre 5 Mile Run held annually in Ashburn, Va. Since its inception in 1991, the Run has raised more than $1.6 million for Children’s National Medical Center's Cardiology Fund, Children's Fairfax Outpatient Center, and most recently the Van Metre Cardiovascular Surgery Operating Room.
